Toyota is gearing up to unveil the long-awaited LandCruiser FJ — a compact, adventure-ready addition to its legendary off-road family.

According to news sources, the global debut is expected to take place on October 21 at 5:00 a.m. Tokyo time.

Reports suggest that select media outlets in Japan have already been given a private preview of the SUV ahead of its public debut at the Tokyo Motor Show, which opens to the press on October 29.

The new LandCruiser FJ’s design isn’t exactly a mystery anymore. It first grabbed attention as the Toyota Compact Cruiser EV concept, and later surfaced through patent filing images, hinting at a bold, squared-off design that stays true to Toyota’s rugged DNA.

Unlike the old FJ Cruiser’s quirky rear-hinged doors and pillarless frame, the upcoming LandCruiser FJ adopts a more traditional five-door layout. It also features a side-hinged tailgate with an externally mounted spare wheel — a classic nod to Toyota’s off-road heritage and a design reminiscent of the previous-generation Prado.

Under the hood, reports point to a 2.7-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine, the same unit that powers the base-spec Hilux. This motor produces around 163hp and 241 Nm of torque, offering a balance of reliability and performance suited for both city driving and mild trail work.

In terms of dimensions, the LandCruiser FJ is expected to measure around 4,500mm in length, making it roughly five inches shorter than the Corolla Cross. Some reports indicate that the FJ could be built on Toyota’s TNGA-F platform, the same body-on-frame architecture used by the latest LandCruiser models. This would ensure genuine four-wheel-drive credentials.

The LandCruiser FJ is expected to roll out first across Southeast Asian markets, with global availability to follow.
